Currently Not Collectible Status

rIf paying the IRS is not realistic right now, the next step is understanding whether protection is available. 👉 Start Your Tax Triage

What Currently Not Collectible status means

Currently Not Collectible status means the IRS agrees that collecting from you right now would create financial hardship.

This does not erase the tax debt.

It does mean the IRS may pause active collection efforts while your current financial condition does not support payment.

Depending on the situation, that can help stop or prevent actions such as:

  • wage garnishment
  • bank levies
  • continued collection pressure while hardship is documented

For someone under real financial strain, this can create breathing room that is badly needed.

When it may apply

Currently Not Collectible status may be worth evaluating if:

  • your income is not enough to cover basic living expenses and IRS payments
  • even a small monthly payment is not realistic right now
  • your financial picture supports a hardship-based pause
  • the case needs protection before a longer-term resolution can be considered

The IRS does not approve this based on preference.
It is based on documented financial reality.

Why it matters

For the right case, Currently Not Collectible status can:

  • reduce immediate pressure
  • pause enforcement activity
  • give you time to stabilize financially
  • create room to deal with compliance issues or other unresolved parts of the case

In some situations, the most important first move is not negotiation.
It is protection.

How we approach it

Before recommending hardship status, we review whether the facts support it.

That includes looking at:

  • income
  • living expenses
  • assets
  • collection status
  • filing compliance
  • whether another resolution path may be more appropriate

The objective is to determine whether hardship relief is truly available and whether it is the right next step.
